In their customer document entitled, Best Practices (Doc 806-5118-12). Sun Microsystems recommend the following computer room cleaning schedules;
(1) Hardware and room surface decontamination every three months.
(2) Subfloor void decontamination bi-annually.
With the constant movement of staff, equipment and supplies throughout a computer operations area, it is inevitable that computer rooms become contaminated, due to the natural introduction of dust, dirt and debris. Contamination is caused by dust dirt and debris migrating through the floor/ceiling voids via the air conditioning.
Data suggests that a large percentage of no trouble find (NTF) situations may be caused by dust contamination. Typical symptoms include minor data corruption, high incidence of power supply failures, anomalies and even catastrophic hardware failures.
